I was influenced by the Renaissance period of Michelangelo's sculptures. This painting was inspired by Michelangelo's emotional statue The Pieta. I wanted to portray Mary's sorrowful expression as she was holding the body of her son, Jesus after he was taken down from the cross. I have used contrast colors to bring out the detail of the line work in the sculpture. I used acrylics and mediums to produce a muted dripping vibrant blue portraying Grace. This background emerges through the figure of Mary to give a contemporary feel.
